What's Beurre Noir? : An Introduction

When friends do something extraordinary I like to try and promote their works as best as I can. While this may be one very small and insignificant medium, I feel I can try and do my part through this blog to lend a helping hand when needed. If you are doing something in the clothing world, let me know...but for now its Beurre Noir's time to shine. What follows after the jump are not my words or pictures but from the people behind Beurre Noir itself.

Off to Class - F&M

How Bret celebrates the last class of a semester.

What could possibly describe this picture any better than what it shows you? Nothing, other than context. Classes are winding down for us here at F&M. What better way to commemorate the occasion than a classic look?

Ware Wear...the Outtakes - F&M

An outtake from the Ware Wear photo shoot in the Ware fireplace room.

When your house calls upon you to perform a service, you answer the call. Here at F&M we don't simply live in nondescript dorms as temporary residents, we live in our house, an affiliation that stays with us for our 4 years and beyond. My house, some might say the best house, is Ware and I was asked to take some pictures of our "Ware Wear" for our new website. Since our stuff is quite fashionable, I thought it merited a shoutout here...biased opinion? Most definitely! :)

Casually Rugged - F&M

"Its raining outside???" -what I wish Pete had said

This picture is also from that horribly soggy day last week and what struck me was the fact that Pete here still bothered to try and look, well...business like. I know when its rainy and dreary outside I try to stray away from wearing khakis because of the thinness of the material. Pete however stayed the course and it looks like the khakis are no worse for the wear. The only evidence of the conditions of the day are his soaked umbrella and the rugged shoots (I call boots that look like shoes shoots) he's wearing, hence I have dubbed this casually rugged.

Rainy Day En Negro - F&M

Erika's all black everything.

What a horribly rainy day it was when I took this picture. Being more of a fan of snow, I couldn't help but imagine what epic snow mounds that rain would have been if this had happened in December...but I digress. Erika's outfit would not have withstood a wintry blast. The all black (everything) caught my eye as I was closing my window to keep the rain in its natural element. On a very depressing day, it was the darkest color of them all that added a little life to it...at least for me.

Also this post inaugurates a new label: ABE, which means all black everything. I don't know how many ABE's this blog will see...but I'm game to find out.

Pattern - F&M/Millersville

Liz's pattern in Goethean Hall

Why is this post F&M and Millersville? Because Liz here is a full time student at Millersville who is in enrolled in my arabic class here at F&M. Her shirt caught my eye when she came in class but when our professor noticed it too I had to take a picture.

Corduroy Day - F&M

Reilly catching up on life in the College Center.

Today marks the day of corduroy. Not only is Reilly here wearing a thin ribbed pair of pants here, but I rolled out of bed and put on a pair of brown medium thread pants and then proceeded to walk past a friend wearing a corduroy jacket as I came back from lunch. Coincidences warrant pictures...hopefully I can track down my jacket friend to add to the day's collection.

Awkward Thespian - F&M

Jai...loosen up my friend :)

Next time I'm not going to ask Jai to pose...there are some people who are captured better in their natural element, and I think that would have boded well for Jai here. I'm kidding, Jai and I have a hate-hate friendship so I can't help but dig at him.

In any case I thought the soul patch and the glasses gave Jai a thespian look...when he came out of his room he resembled an actor coming out of a side door on Broadway after a performance...perhaps that's how I should have taken the picture. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

A Cup of Tea - F&M/Columbia-Barnard

Casual formality. Photo courtesy of Naima Green

A facebook profile picture rarely elicits a second glance for artistic reasons. Usually its because you can't believe your friend is making that face, holding that bottle or kissing that guy or girl. My friend Lipton's facebook picture was one of those rare exceptions to the rule, a breathe of fresh air...and this wonderful shot isn't even it.

A facebook post revealed this picture and his profile picture was taken by one Naima Green who has a clear knack for crafting a good photograph. I invite you to visit her blog at
http://naimapatrice.tumblr.com/ to see more pictures like this one. I certainly will be a frequent visitor.

The Scarf Accent - F&M

It took me a while to warm up to scarves, and yes that pun was intended, but now that I have I do appreciate when people use them to accent their attire. Kristen here is doing just that, and I like it even more that its not a loud in your face scarf, its just there for variety.

Winter Preview? - F&M

"Style of the current economy" -Brendan

Yes, this is a picture of me. I said I would accept entries from anyone and everyone, of any and everyone...and so I too must fall under that category. My friend Brendan sent this in with this original description:

"The Mayor himself. Decidedly exhibiting the versatility of the classy look of layering. This man, wearing the latest in burgundy scarf fashion, stands ready to show this individuality in a subtle and refined way. Notice how his slightly ruffled charcoal cotton Pea Coat shows that he is ready for a business meeting or a trip through the rough seas of the Antarctic. But forever in touch with modern trends, this man sports a Blackberry - which is a last generation model to show that even though he has the money and fashion sense to sport his outfit, he is in touch with the sensibility of current economic times."

A few points to note. This picture was taken last year during a trip to the historic district in Philadelphia by Brendan. Shortly after this picture I upgraded my red Blackberry 8330, seen here, to the 8530 and in fact I recently upgraded to the 9650 as well. I did this all either by rebate or Ebay with money that I saved up for those purposes so that I could continue to stay connected with the world. I am still very much in touch with the economic problems facing our country :)

Friends - F&M

Dee and Becca on the path to Hartman Green

Something caught my eye about Dee and Becca as they came down the path towards me. Perhaps it was Becca's red fishnets, or the fact that it looked like they were wearing the same shade of blue/green or whatever you like to call it. Whatever it was the picture came out well...even if Dee is trying to get an extra inch or two on tippy toe :)

P.S: It was really windy so I'm rather shocked that their hair looks relatively composed, I guess it was good timing.

Comfy Wear - F&M

Fico keeping it real...because we are in college after all.

Breaking news...this blog is about college. What is more collegial than sweats and a hoodie? At the end of the day we all want to be comfortable...I would hope. Fico here is doing exactly that, in fact he was rockin' out in his own world before I stopped him, sorry about that man but thanks for posing.

The White Rebellion - F&M

Curzio, bucking "norms".

You want to know just how not into fashion I am...I totally forgot the "rule" about white after labor day. Well Curzio here didn't forget about it, in fact he purposefully wore white in what I'll call a protest of norms. I'm a big fan of sweaters so that's what caught my eye, but hey to each his or her own right?

Classy Simplicity - F&M

Danielle classing it up in blue.

Danielle always looks classy, so I was glad that I ran into her the other day to snap this pic. I really liked the blue layering under the necklace with the shades.

The Hat - F&M

Tim, and his hat, read his homework in the Steinman College Center at F&M

I like people with a signature...no I don't mean your John Hancock, I mean something that marks them as being them. For some people its a bracelet, a particular color or brand. For my friend Tim here its his hat. You rarely see him without it and don't try making him part with it either. In his words he "bequeaths it upon you, you don't bequeath it upon yourself." A picture he didn't mind so much, and so I offer to you as the first entry in this little venture The Hat.

This Is a Call To Arms...

The beauty of the internet is that when one has an idea, one has free range to run with it...for good or bad. Hopefully this idea falls under the former.

My name is Robert Diggs and I fell in love with the Sartorialist ever sense my friend Sofia put me onto it a last year. I don't consider myself a fashion guy, however I do think I am an appreciator of good taste and well thought out dress. I am not someone to have a pair of jeans over $35, although I do currently but not by choice, but neither will I bark at you if one pair of your jeans costs more than my entire wardrobe. I say that to say that I am no authority, just a guy who has opinions on style and I thought I should share.

Now this project isn't just about me and my little corner of life that is known as Franklin & Marshall College, I want this to be about campuses all over the country, even the world if we can manage it. The Sartorialist keeps me coming back because I can't wait to see what they will put up next, and that's what I want this to grow into.

With that in mind, I'll be walking around my campus with my camera a little more frequently and I invite you to do the same. If you want to be a regular contributor, contact us and we can make it happen. If you just want to have us throw up a picture every now and then, then email us with as much relevant info that you want made public (i.e: name, school, class year, major, hometown, age, etc). Together we can grow this into something special.

Thanks for reading!
